The Cage / No Escape -by Robert Gardner

The Cage

The monkey can’t control his rage,
Nor shake to bits his ancient cage,
Though he shakes the limbs of a single tree
In a quivering forest of trees –
And so Genetics holds his hand
And will not let him play The Man,
Put no machine-gun in his reach,
Nor medal on his hairy chest,
Until Genetics tells us who
Is better and is best.

No Escape

The elevated chimpanzee
Is not necessarily happy and free,
For even on branches made for three
The celibate order can rule,
And though he dominates the air
And seems a King in his forest lair,
Something in him surely knows –
The Zoo is everywhere.
