The Comet -by Robert Gardner

Into that old familiar sea
I used-to crown, The Simply Me,
Where tentacle strands
Suppressed the man
I dreamed that I could one day be,
She crashed with no apparent shame
To point out a route that led
Away from never-ending blame –

Then on my oceanic stage
Her comet burned and slowly blazed
A path through even my white hair –
And comet and I and flame became
One atom of color in the coral reef.
